MONTANA – DAKOTAS HMA

BLM Montana/Dakotas manages the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range on approximately 36,000 acres. The appropriate management level is 120 horses.

Since 1971, the BLM has removed 700+ horses from the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range public lands in Montana.

CLAIM: Animals removed from public rangelands are offered to the public for adoption; un-adopted animals are cared for on open pastures for the rest of their lives.  The reality of that claim – coming soon

Appropriate Management Level (AML) of horses and burros per Herd Management Area (HMA)

Animal Management Unit (EST AMU) = Current individual population estimates on entire HMA,

HINT: How to read EST AMU:    ( ? = yes, needs actual animal #’s / 0 = none / blank = unknown)

Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range – #PMWHR

this one is more confusing to break down as multiple agencies all have multiple docs, and inconsistency. be patient as I am working on this behind the scenes.

This is a joint management area (JMA) as the horses are in multiple areas managed by different agencies, primarily BLM.

Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range HMA (BLM) / Pryor Mountain National Wild Horse Range PMNWHR (NPS) /
and Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Territory WHT (FS)

The Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range is one of only four designated wild horse and burro ranges in the country, which means the area is managed principally, but not exclusively, for wild horses and burros.

  • 40,056 acres  though BLM states 38,000 acres
The PMWHR spans across three different land management agencies: the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park service (NPS), and Forest Service (USFS). The BLM is the lead management agency for the entire PMWHR range. The BLM portion covers approximately 27,183 acres (68%) of the range, the NPS includes 7,836 acres (20%), and the USFS encompasses 4,386 acres (11%). Additionally, there is one 640 acre private in-holding on the north end of the PMWHR.

  • EST AMU 2020             # 170  horses    # burros   #  cattle   #  sheep

Grazing allotments: 0 ?

There are no livestock grazing allotments authorized on the PMWHR. The BLM authorizes one livestock trailing permit, which allows a private landowner to move cattle across the PMWHR twice a year, for one day each in April and November and totals 14 AUMs.

WHBA – I need do more research here to verify this. I see conflicting info as I search docs. As there are three governement agencies operating this herd. Do all follow this no grazing claim?
